The Lopez family’s roots in the asphalt industry run deep — well before General Asphalt was founded, they owned and operated asphalt plants and paving operations in Cuba. That expertise and entrepreneurial drive came with them to Miami, and it has shaped everything that followed.

1966
A new market. A new company.
Edward M. Lopez arrived in Miami and recognized an opening in the local asphalt market. Together with founding partners – Henry Lee and Katherine Mills, Sam Williams, Richard Still and brothers Herman, Stanley, Eugene and Paul Marks – they formed General Asphalt Company. Edward grew the business from a single plant, building a strong reputation as a paving subcontractor to larger firms across the Miami market.
2nd Gen
Robert Lopez Sr. takes the helm.
Edward’s middle son Robert joined the business and rose through the ranks to lead the company. Under his guidance, General Asphalt expanded from one plant to two — boosting production capability and deepening its reputation for quality, reliability, and performance across South Florida. During this pivotal chapter, his brother Albert stepped into key roles overseeing manufacturing operations, quality control, and equipment management.

Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Collier and Monroe counties, regional and international airports, municipalities, and commercial and private developers.
