MIAMI, Fla. — August 28, 2026 — General Asphalt Co., LLC, a leading South Florida heavy highways and civil infrastructure contractor and asphalt producer, today celebrates its 60th anniversary in business. Founded in 1966 by Edward M. Lopez and a group of dedicated partners, the family-owned company has grown from a single asphalt plant into one of South Florida’s leading construction firms.

Over six decades, General Asphalt has manufactured more than 20 million tons of asphalt and paved more than 16 million tons of material. The company operates two plants in Miami-Dade County approved by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and maintains AASHTO-accredited quality control laboratories staffed by CTQP-certified technicians.

“My grandfather started this company with nothing but hard work and a belief in doing things right,” said Robert Lopez Jr., General Asphalt’s third-generation CEO. “Sixty years later, that same commitment to integrity, quality, and accountability still guides everything we do.”

Edward M. Lopez founded General Asphalt in 1966. His son, Robert Lopez Sr., later expanded the company to two plants, working alongside his brother, Albert Lopez, who oversaw manufacturing, quality control, and equipment. Today, under Robert Lopez Jr.’s leadership, the company continues to serve as a trusted partner to FDOT, Miami-Dade County, regional and international airports, municipalities, and commercial developers throughout South Florida.

Unlike contractors that rely on subcontractors, General Asphalt controls its entire production process, from manufacturing through final paving, using its own fleet and crews to ensure consistent quality and accountability on every job — from airport runways and DOT expressways to neighborhood streets and commercial developments.
